Phoenix Idiotarod 2019 Was Colorful and Idiotic Fun

Few events in the Valley are as colorfully chaotic, mirthfully madcap, and bizarrely entertaining as the annual Phoenix Idiotarod, a gonzo affair that takes place each spring in the downtown area. It’s equal parts urban shopping cart race, counter-culture event, bar crawl, and cosplay showcase that riffs on the Iditarod and pop culture in general.

This year’s edition of the Idiotarod happened on Saturday, February 9, in downtown Phoenix and was just as over the top as ever. Like with previous editions, teams of participants raced around wearing costumes inspired by movies, television shows, and other bits of pop culture and piloted colorfully decorated shopping carts. Along the way, they stopped off at bars like the Bikini Lounge and various checkpoints, competing in drinking challenges and other contests. It was a wild time, and we’ve got the photos to prove it.
