A Look Inside and Outside the Tense Meeting Prompted by Phoenix Police Encounter

Several thousand concerned citizens attended a community meeting at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, following an incident in which Iesha Harper and Dravon Ames' and their young daughters had a gun pulled on them by a police officer after one of the children allegedly shoplifted a doll. Phoenix Police Chief Jeri Williams and Mayor Kate Gallego listened to residents' concerns alongside Executive Assistant Chief Michael Kurtenbach, City Manager Ed Zuercher, Assistant City Manager Milton Dohoney Jr., and Councilman Michael Nowakowski.

Things got heated quickly and the crowd grew restless as Gallego and Williams largely remained silent. Click here for a detailed account of the community meeting.
