Fushicho Daiko Celebrates 25 Years of Japanese Drumming

by Robert Isenberg | Thursday, May 18, 2017

For such a small building, Fushicho Daiko on Grand Avenue sure produces a lot of sound: During rehearsals, you can sometimes feels the rhythm of its drums down the block. Fushicho is a studio for "taiko," or traditional Japanese percussion, and this year the dojo celebrates 25 years of education and performance in the Valley of the Sun. Fushicho has introduced innumerable Phoenicians to the art of taiko, from children to retirees; some students have studied here for years and even traveled to Japan for workshops. Founded in 1992 by music educator Esther Vandecar, Fushicho is now spearheaded by Eileen Morgan and her team of musicians. We visited Fushicho to talk with Morgan about the community-building power of taiko.
