SpongeBob SquarePants has a bad rap. Overzealous merchandisers mis-market him as a canary-colored bath toy. Educators and many parents – who in most cases have never watched the show — vilify him. But kids (and grown-ups who dig pop culture and social satire) get the idealistic naif from Bikini Bottom. Our kids spout the wisdom of SpongeBob like their elders of a generation ago did Seinfeld. The saffron sea creature (or at least some dude in a SpongeBob suit) will be on hand at the Arizona Exposition & State Fair’s Arizona Lottery Backyard from Friday, October 30, through Sunday, November 1, which is one core reason we big kids and our little ones waited ’til this weekend to head down to the Fairgrounds.

Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Oct. 30. Continues through Nov. 5, 2009
