Mike Herrera is scheduled to perform on Tuesday, March 23, at the Underground in Mesa, and Wednesday, March 24, at Yucca Tap Room in Tempe.
Mike Herrera made a name for himself as the frontman of the Bremerton, Washington, three-piece punk band MxPx. That band formed in 1993 when the original members of the group — vocalist/bassist Herrera, drummer Yuri Ruley, and guitarist Andy Husted — were in high school. The band quickly became a staple of the alternative music scene of the '90s, thanks in large part to alt-radio hits like "Chick Magnet" and "I'm OK, You're OK" and frequent appearances on The Warped Tour. While MxPx still continues to tour and release new albums, it hasn't stopped Mike Herrera from pursuing side projects. The most notable of those projects is Tumbledown, in which Herrera trades the pop-punk sound of MxPx for rockabilly and country, a style that Herrera says he's been writing music for since an early age. Tumbledown recently released its self-titled debut album on the record label End Sounds and has been touring in support of it. But the good news for MxPx fans is that Herrera has managed to occasionally squeeze in a solo acoustic show here and there to play old familiar MxPx songs. One of those shows just so happens to be happening at Yucca Tap Room.
