Underoath @ Marquee Theatre

Since forming in 1997 in Ocala, Florida, this self-identified Christian metalcore band has undergone a full personnel enema. First, guitarist Luke Morton — the guy who came up with the group's name, no less — split on the eve of their debut album, Act of Depression (1999). Four years later, lead vocalist Dallas Taylor followed suit, allegedly forced out for behavior issues. And so on and so on, until spring of last year, when drummer/vocalist Aaron Gillespie — the last of the five original members — parted ways with the band after playing a show in Milan, Italy. One can only guess at the reasons behind the outfit's Ultra Cleanse-like predilection for waste removal. All we know is that the rock 'n' roll lifestyle can be hard on a group of nice, pious fellows who just want to make grinding, mosh-ready metal and sing vaguely about Jesus. Witness their early departure from the 2006 Warped Tour, reportedly because of the brutal taunting they received from NOFX frontman Michael "Fat Mike" Burkett. "We have some differences," Burkett said later. "They tend to not believe in evolution, dinosaurs, reproductive rights, premarital sex, or gay marriage." Maybe one of the excommunicated dudes got caught stroking his Darwin.
