Sir Ernest Shackleton was one tough mother. Marooned by sea ice that destroyed his ship during the 1914 Trans-Antarctic Expedition, Shackleton and his crew survived a winter on meager rations, the occasional leopard seal (which tried to feed on them), cunning, and wits. Ultimately, the journey became a triumph of perseverance of man over the elements. This saga is the inspiration for 69°S, a collaboration between The Phantom Limb Company and The Kronos Quartet. A mixture of photography, puppetry, music, and film, the stunning performance is a deeply moving experience presented in a series of tableaux vivants playing on the bi-polar (pun intended) emotions of Shackleton as he struggled for survival. It’s not hard to feel the hardship -- and the elation -- those hardy souls endured during that endless winter.
