The City of Phoenix hopes to create a new Latino Cultural Center, but not before gathering community input.

The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture will hold three town hall meetings this month, so members of the public can learn more about the City's plans and share their own ideas.

Basically, City officials want to hear from as many people as possible. This is their burning question: What does Latino arts and culture in Phoenix mean to you?

At this point, the City isn't committed to a specific site, set of programs, or timeline, says Gail Browne, executive director for the Office of Arts and Culture.

Instead, they're laying the groundwork by conducting town halls and doing a capital needs assessment and feasibility study. And they've enlisted Evonne Gallardo, a Los Angeles-based consultant, to help.

Gallardo will facilitate the town hall meetings. Here's when those will take place:

  • Thursday, April 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Maryvale Community Center, 4420 North 51st Avenue.
  • Saturday, April 22, from 10 a.m. to noon at Grant Park Community Center, 701 South Third Avenue.

Then, Gallardo will organize everyone's input, and include it in her report to the City at the end of June.

After that, the City will decide how to move forward with the Center. That's when details like financing and possible locations will come into play.

The Center could be created through new construction, adaptive reuse, or repurposing of an existing site, Brown says.

Upcoming Events

"The first step is learning what what people want to see in a Latino Cultural Center," Browne says.

The City of Phoenix is holding Latino Cultural Center town halls on April 13, 20, and 22. Visit the City of Phoenix website for details.
