  • Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest Arizona Qualifier

Jonathan McNamaraA group of competitive eaters downing dogs at the Nathan's Hot Dog Contest Arizona Qualifier at Arizona Mill Mall. See more shots in our slide show. Matthew Ramirez stepped out on to a raised platform in the Arizona Mills Mall food court and struck the sort of body building pose that would make Arnold Schwarzenegger proud. • Top Ten Dance Collections of 2008, Both Mixed and Unmixed

By Randall RobertsAny knucklehead with DSL and a laptop can now make an electronic track. With a half hour of clicking and fiddling, you can sample enough cheesy beats and mashups to clog arteries from here to Berlin. Simple dropdown mouse maneuvers can transform electro tracks into progressive house tracks (from dry and synthetic to wet and gushy), rhythm tracks can be tempo-tweaked with an upward toggle to change a Timbaland beat into a Chromeo one. Add some T-Pain-esque pitch-correction vocal

Creator-performer Jake Ehrenreich shows slides of, among other things, his family, andb. The audience is encouraged to yell out, among other things, straight lines, punch lines, random Yiddish words, and the names of Catskills resorts, I s

  • Budget Beat: The Hero Factory

"Life is like a sandwich. The more you add to it, the better it becomes." I have no idea what genius offered that pearl -- Shakespeare? Thoreau? Charles Schulz? -- and, frankly, I don't care to take the time to look it up, because I'm too busy planning my next trip to The Hero Factory, a breakfast 'n' lunch spot in downtown Phoenix's Orpheum Lofts building.

  • This Just In: Brooklyn Has Own "Sound," Numerous Bands

Brooklyn has become a mecca of sorts for indie rock in the past decade, with numerous new bands emerging from its brownstone-lined streetsI was listening to Sirius XMU yesterday while driving with the air conditioning on, since it's a balmy November in the Valley. On came a song by new indie/psych rock band Bear in Heaven, "You Do You." I was enthralled by the song, not being bored as shit 30 seconds into as I am with most indie rock these days. I was instantly curious about this Bear in Heav
