Twenty-two-year-old Tempe denizen Stephen Steinbrink is mostly known for his beautifully crafted, twangy pop woven from the tangled threads of love, insecurity, hope, and everyday despair. In addition to creating music and frequent touring, Steinbrink has poured himself into illustration. His drawings have appeared as the art for many of his own singles and albums and in his Manys ‘zine.
Now, Steinbrink has a sweet gallery space – Sweets & Beats, 1504 Grand Avenue – to showcase his work during “The Art of Stephen Steinbrink” exhibit. Steinbrink’s on-paper pieces in this show are primarily ink, colored pencil, and watercolor, and comprise the visual portion of his latest project, “Yellow Canary Black Belt.” The surrealistic hodgepodges of quirky folks would be at home amongst classic underground comics, but most surprising is his foray into ceramic sculpture with three busts of odd characters that have seemingly stepped out of Steinbrink’s sketchbook.
