Donning an actual mirror as an album cover could be a clever ploy, but the tunes that Sebastian Clark and Normandie Wilson have crafted provide solid evidence of their playful sincerity. The two twentysomethings initially bonded over their mutual love for the Beach Boys, so Brian Wilson’s pocket-symphony, sonic-cohesive influences are definitely present. On the pair’s new album, Music for Smart People, Clark and Wilson’s thoughtful songwriting, pleasantly elastic vocals, and solid grooves reflect the shine of ’60s and ’70s pop without sinking to AM-gold schmaltz.
