Circus Maximus

There’s a reason 10 million people worldwide attend Cirque du Soleil shows each year, and a reason the original run of Cirque du Soleil’s Saltimbanco lasted 14 years. The show began in 1992 as a touring big top that traveled to five continents. Recently, the Montreal-based acrobat/circus/theater troupe retooled the act for larger audiences. It now includes trapeze artists, Chinese poles with 26 acrobats maneuvering 25 feet above the stage, and aerial ballet on bungees. Saltimbanco‘s producers describe the show as “an imaginary city where diversity is a cause for hope.” That type of language might seem a bit lofty, but given the high-flying subject matter, we think it’s okay to be a little over-the-top.
