Reader support matters more than ever

Discretion is the less sweaty part of valor, we muse as we stare into the daunting maw of summer. Take Ro Ho En, the Japanese Friendship Garden, which takes its ultra-sensible annual break beginning June 1. But before we say sayonara, we’ll watch girls go by dressed in their summer clothes, which was fun before the Stones got their mitts on it.
The Garden’s “Strolling in Yukata: A Summer’s Evening at Ro Ho En” event features a light meal, art and dance demonstrations, and people milling about in hoppi coats and yukata — informal cotton robes for men and women that originated as after-bath wear but now have a whole fashion thing going on. (If you can’t find yours — yeah, you, cutoffs guy – the informal kimonos will be for sale at the event.)
