Phoenix isn’t known for being a late-night town. Not like the doors roll up at 6 or anything, but if you’re looking for food after 10 p.m., we hope you’re in the mood for a Denny’s Grand Slam. Live entertainment after midnight? It’s strip joint or bust.

However, on Friday, May 1, there will be at least one light still shining in downtown Phoenix – at Night Watch: An All Night Arts Vigil, which starts at 10 p.m. and continues ’til 7 the next morning at Deus Ex Machina. What exactly is a vigil? In medieval times, it was a night of contemplation or prayer. Here, locals will “contemplate” visual art, spoken word, and music and “pray” that the crappy economy won’t sink our newly blossomed arts scene.

Fri., May 1, 10 p.m., 2009
