Country singer Buddy Jewell isn’t on the cover of national music or entertainment magazines, nor is he being presented with the key to any city. Such are the perils of being an American Idol knockoff.

Jewell, as five or six of you may recall, was named the next “Nashville Star” on the USA Network talent-contest show of the same name. It’s ironic, however, that so far, Jewell seems to be finding as much post-show success as Clay, Ruben and Kelly.

Jewell found a hit in the rollicking song “Help Pour Out the Rain (Lacey’s Song),” which was nominated for a Country Music Association Horizon Award and attracted attendees of the Nashville staple Fan Fair, at which many donned a button asking, “Who’s Your Buddy?”

Jewell’s self-titled album debuted at No. 1 on the Country Albums Chart, making him the third highest debuting country artist since the inception of SoundScan, according to his Columbia Records Web site. Not floating too lightly on prima donna cloud, the Osceola, Arkansas, native is giving back to his fellow Stars. Show alumnus Jamey Garner plays harmonica on Jewell’s rendition of “Sweet Southern Comfort,” and finalist Miranda Lambert duets with him on the Merle Haggard song “Today I Started Loving You Again.”

Will you step up to support New Times this year?

At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $15,500 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.

$30,000

Hopefully that’s not From Justin to Kelly all over again.
