You might picture an art show called “Journal Entries and Margin Notes” as a paper collection of handwritten thoughts. But local artist Beth Shook, who is featured at Practical Art, 5070 North Central Avenue, this December, crafts a unique presentation. Shook uses clay to tell her stories, integrating oxides and glazes to show her interpretation of some of life’s notable moments.

“This work is about my struggle to get out of my own way,” Shook says. “I often struggle with what God puts in front of me.” While the six works on display were inspired by hard times, there’s a positive meaning behind them. “I’d like people to recognize a message of hope,” Shook says. “In the midst of difficulties, there is a way to overcome.”
