It’s a shocking fact: One in 33 adults in Arizona are under some form of correctional control – either in jail or prison; on parole or probation. A quarter-century ago, this number was one in 79.
What happened? In “It’s Not Just Black and White,” his new three-month-long residency exhibition at ASU, Phoenix artist Gregory Sale attempts to unravel the complicated narrative of justice and public safety. With installations, discussions, and programs that include a tour of Tent City, Sale will address the how and why of incarceration and our attitudes about it.
The project – part of ASU Art Museum’s “Social Studies” series of residency exhibitions – demands dialogue about modern criminal “justice” in a process-oriented context that allows visitors to witness the artist’s process while he’s creating.
