Though this weekly has featured ventures into spoken word and electro, the bread and butter at WTFunk Friday remains hip-hop. This Friday’s installment looks especially potent, hosting guest MCs DFS (Phal Kilmer & Floyd Write), Done Done One, Joe Baggs, Alkatraz (of T.S.O.I.), We Got Next, and Clockwork, and featuring DJ performances from resident mix-masters DJ Marvel, and Pearlie Q. DJ Marvel comes with serious cred, having worked with Pete Rock, Talib Kweli, E40, Lil’ Kim and more. The Washington, D.C., DJ is known for hosting the K.O.R.T. Boyz radio show, where he favors no-nonsense mixes, mixing minimalist jazz samples with club bangers and clips of dialogue. The free party kicks off at 9 p.m. Friday, July 15, at the Stray Cat, 2433 East University Drive in Tempe.
