Laidback comedian Eddie Griffin seems like the kind of affable, easygoing dude that you might invite over to watch the game and share a six-pack. Just make sure that the kids and wife aren’t around. The gravelly-voiced comic can kick it mellow, but tends to get hilariously raunchy at times, dishing out obscene jokes about racial relations, sex, religion, and politics.
In addition to dropping F-bombs and N-bombs, the standup mused about actual bombs in his last comedy special, You Can Tell ‘Em I Said It. “[Barack Obama] ran for office, and said, ‘Imma stop both wars,’” Griffin jokes. “Didn’t he just send 60,000 more troops to Afghanistan? They though they was going home. Nope!”
Griffin is well known for his sitcom Malcolm and Eddie and 2002’s Undercover Brother. But it’s his ease in speaking with equal amount of ‘hood-honed bombast about getting high and chucking holy books for the Golden Rule that makes the comic compellingly funny.
Griffin gets real on the mic starting at 8 p.m. on Saturday, September 10, at Celebrity Theatre, 440 North 32nd Street.
