Paving paradise and putting up a parking lot is a common practice in Phoenix. But this Friday, it’s time take back those paved spaces, if only for a day.
Phoenix’s Rogue Green group is out to turn “going green” into more than just washing out and recycling empty soda cans. At three strategic locations in the Valley, activists, community planners and members of the public will reclaim metered curbside parking spots, and turn them into temporary public parks for PARK(ing) Day.
Inexpensive metered parking increases traffic and pollution downtown, the event’s organizers say. But they’re hoping to inspire greener behavior with two events in the morning, and one at night. And anyone can take part in the free event — all you need are a few quarters and a desire to alter the car-heavy landscape of downtown Phoenix.
