Modern-day parents have their hands full, what with elementary school kids quoting True Blood and teens huffing refrigerator coolant. But the ‘rents haven’t always been on their best behavior, either. Remember the moms who brawled over Elmo dolls and the one dude who pummeled a fellow hockey dad to death?
The parents depicted in Arizona Theatre Company’s production of Yasmina Reza’s God of Carnage are arguably even more outrageous than their real-life counterparts. “I wouldn’t want to be in a room with four people that go this far,” quips director Rick Lombardo.
The show follows two sets of parents who converse over coffee after their respective kids get into a fight on the playground. Fueled by alcohol and poor judgment, the meeting soon degrades to childish taunts, profanity, and, eventually, projectile vomit. “The first time we worked on that scene, I got a little queasy,” Lombardo admits. “The way it works in the play, it’s the moment that just rips everything open.”
