When a band has a quick and steep rise to success — and doesn’t come from a town with much indie cred (read: New York or L.A.) — it appears to easily let go of its hometown as an important aspect of its identity. Phoenix is lucky that Jimmy Eat World, the most successful area band of its generation, has done no such thing. Not only is frontman Jim Adkins known to shop at local record stores and pop into ASU’s radio station, The Blaze 1330 AM, but his band also makes an effort with its recorded material. JEW’s latest record, Invented, was primarily recorded in Tempe and features backing vocals from Courtney Marie Andrews, a songstress on the River Jones Music label who is currently on tour with the band. At a time when boycotts plague our state’s music scene, it’s nice to know that we’ve still got a few Phoenix success stories with some pride.
