If artist biopics like Pollock and Vincente Minnelli’s Lust for Life taught us anything it’s that some artists are better left alone while engaged in their creative processes, lest one witness aggro meltdowns or aural mutilation.

Director Sophia Fiennes left those notions by the wayside to observe the creative process of German artist Anselm Kiefer in her documentary Over Your Cities Grass Will Grow. Fiennes follows the painter and sculptor who left Germany to transform a dilapidated silk factory in the south of France into a studio. With stunning imagery of Kiefer’s massive installations, Fiennes’ film captures how, why, and what the artist creates and destroys.
