Blues legend Bessie Smith’s tombstone (ironically, purchased by singer Janis Joplin just before her own death) declares, “The greatest blues singer in the world will never stop singing.”
Smith may be crooning in the afterlife, but here on earth her sultry tunes and the songs of other late blues greats will continue to move audiences of Black Theatre Troupe’s Blues in the Night at Playhouse on the Park. Set in a run-down Chicago hotel, the musical revue follows three women who use the universal language of blues to chastise the men who’ve done them wrong. It’s a tale everyone can relate to.
“Life is always going to present us with challenges that can sometimes seem insurmountable,” says director David Hemphill. “Grief, love, lost love, racism… The blues has always been the best medium to express these challenges.”
