Although any fashion fiend worth her salt wouldn’t dare get them wet, the new and historic items of clothing exhibited in “The Sea” were inspired by bodies of water and nautical themes.

The breadth of the collection, which is on view in the Ellman Fashion Design Gallery through Sunday includes elaborate bathing costumes from the 1880s, Judith Leiber nautilus shell bags, and modern-day couture from Karl Lagerfeld’s Spring 2012 line for Chanel. It’s a waterborne marriage of iconic sportswear, high fashion, and functional pieces, such as naval uniforms, that combine to make a romantic fashion exhibition.

Thursdays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Wednesdays, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sundays, 12-5 p.m. Starts: March 3. Continues through July 15, 2012
