Alfred Hitchcock did one sort of thing when he made a movie based on John Buchan’s 1915 spy novel, The 39 Steps. The 1935 film became an indelible classic action-mystery and, therefore, ripe for parody. So Patrick Barlow did a very different sort of thing when he created his Olivier- and Tony-winning stage version, Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps, a perpetual-motion farce that incorporates nods to other Hitchcock films and pop-culture motifs, continuing through Sunday, January 27, at Fountain Hills Theater.
What makes the show not just funny but entirely amazing is the four-person cast, in which one actor plays hero Richard Hannay, one actress plays three femmes fatales, and the other two actors frantically divide approximately 145 other roles between them. It’s like a pop-up book that reveals the magical secrets of the guts of theater, but also sort of like watching NASCAR and waiting for a fiery wreck.
