Damion Berger and Gilbert Garcin work in similar media with very different results. Berger is a New York-based photographer who says his work revolves around themes of “social ritual” — tradition, leisure, festivity, and formality. He works with a large-format view camera, and in his Black Powder series, the artist documents massive pyrotechnic explosions and celebrations of world events, including the inauguration of the earth’s tallest building in Dubai and a performance in the Jardin du Tuileries.
Garcin is a photographer who utilizes his small-scale photographs and old-school collage technique to tell stories of human nature. His black-and-white fantasy land is manipulated by hand (instead of Photoshop) with the help of cardboard and string, small found objects that interact with his photographs, and use of light and shadow.
