Technically, Mike Epps is a triple threat. The Indiana native raps, acts, and does stand-up. But the only thing that Epps’ rapping and acting pose are threats to is his chances of becoming a great stand-up comic. Best known for having hosted multiple BET Hip-Hop Awards shows and playing Black Doug in The Hangover, Epps’ acting and rapping typically come across as spillover from his stand-up routines. Perhaps Epps’ stand-up would be even better if he abandoned the peripheral pursuits that have diluted his overall product.
Fortunately, Epps will stick to what he does best when he comes to Stand Up Live, 50 West Jefferson Street, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, August 9. Tickets to the 18-and-over show start at $40. Performances continue through Sunday, August 11. Visit www.standuplive.com or call 480-tktkt for details.
Thu., Aug. 8, 8 p.m.; Fri., Aug. 9, 7:30 & 10:15 p.m.; Sat., Aug. 10, 7 & 10:50 p.m.; Sun., Aug. 11, 7 p.m., 2013
