Any respectable Arizonan knows that Mexico’s equivalent of cuatro de julio takes place on dieciséis de septiembre, not cinco de mayo. They also know just enough Spanish to make sense of the previous sentence. That is why one of the Valley’s most decorated cantinas feels confident that its Rockin’ Taco Street Fest is gonna be muy bueno.
And in case you’re rusty, dieciséis means “16.” Since the 16th falls on a Monday this year the folks at Chandler’s El Palacio Restaurant, 2950 East Germann Road, hosts its Independence Day soirée on Saturday, September 14, from 4 to 10 p.m. Aside from providing some of the most celebrated Mexican food in the 480, the fest will also feature a mustache contest, a taco-eating contest, live music, piñatas for the niños, raffle prizes, and – hopefully — some enormous, amorphously shaped margarita glasses. The ‘stache scenery alone oughta be worth the $5 admission. For more info, visit www.rockintacoaz.com or call 480-802-5770.

Will you step up to support New Times this year?
At New Times, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $15,500 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $30,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of New Times, now’s the time to give back.
