We all know Mrs. Klein — that manipulative, over-bearing woman whose word is the rule of law and those who don’t believe it best be damned. In the case of Nicholas Wright’s brilliant piece of theater, Mrs. Klein, the titled protagonist is a respected psychoanalyst who uses her to manipulate her children. When her son dies in an accident, her daughter — also a psychoanalyst, but one who publicly disputes her mother’s theories — puts the blame squarely on her mother’s shoulders, insinuating he committed suicide to defy her. What follows is a tense, suspenseful, compelling and intelligent psychological drama that hardly slows down to catch a breath as these two women wage a battle that threatens to destroy them both personally and professionally.
