Opportunities to see high-level cricket in Phoenix are rare. Opportunities to see the plot of an underdog sports movie play out in real life are even rarer, which is what makes this weekend’s North American Cricket Championship intriguing.

The three-match series at Nichols Park Basin, 700 North Higley Road in Gilbert, will pit the Midwest Cricket Conference (the American Cricket Federation’s top club) against Toronto Cricket Club (the best Canadian Club). The weekend is sure to feature stellar play from some of the US’ top players, including left-arm spinning all-rounder Nirav Amin. But the real drama is behind the scenes. The American Cricket Federation is desperately trying to establish itself on the international level. A successful showing for the ACF’s best club would go a long way to cementing the Federation’s legitimacy.

The matches will be played on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday starting at 11 a.m. Admission is free. Visit www.americancricketfederation.org.
