This theater season’s been a riotous celebration of dysfunction, but we’re ready for some nurturing warmth. Some Joe DiPietro, whose soft-hearted comedies alternate with blockbuster musicals like Memphis and I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.
As DiPietro told L.A.’s Daily News in 2000, “That’s kind of who my people are . . . I don’t have huge things to rebel against.” It’s an Italian-American thing, as is The Last Romance, running through Sunday, March 16, at Scottsdale’s Theatre Artists Studio. Set in Hoboken, home of both Sinatra and the waterfront, Romance hints at golden-years love for Ralph and Carol — if Ralph’s sister Rose keeps her nose out of it.
