$10,000

You may have believed that your time to party with major stars like Marilyn Monroe and Liz Taylor has passed — but you’d be wrong. The hand of Valley artist Larry Willis brings larger-than-life personages to the opening reception for his latest exhibition, “CINAMATIC,” on Friday, June 6.

While depicting realistic portraits and figures of celebs, Willis uses his pop art sensibility to disentangle them from their familiar contexts. Primarily using acrylic on canvas to cast icons like Frank Zappa, Johnny Depp, and Audrey Hepburn amidst abstract fields, each piece adds a new dimension to the faces we’re used to seeing via tabloids and fluffy entertainment news.

The opening reception for Larry Willis’s “CINAMATIC” is at Willo North Gallery, 2811 North Seventh Avenue, from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, visit www.willonorth.com or RSVP via www.facebook.com/events/1422919457970468/.

Fri., June 6, 6-9 p.m.; Fri., June 20, 6-9 p.m., 2014
