Independent Journalism in Phoenix Needs You
We need to raise $15,000 by August 9 to support the reporting our community depends on. Reader support keeps us independent and is playing a larger role in funding local journalism and shaping what comes next. If you believe independent local journalism matters, make a contribution today.
There is an urban legend surrounding Judo master and ponytail debonaire Steven Seagal that goes like this: On the set of Out For Justice (great movie), Seagal boasted that as a result of extensive training, he was impervious to shime-waza, or chokes. Skeptical, the stunt coordinator on set called his bluff, choked Seagal out and made him poop his pants. True or not, the story proves that Judo is awesome, which is why you need to attend the Southwest Judo Open Tournament in Mesa on August 31. Hosted by Southwest Judo Academy, this tournament will feature more than 200 judoka fighting for the top spot. Just remember to bring some diapers — you never know when poop-yourself kind of moment could happen.
The Southwest Judo Open Tournament 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, August 31, at the Mesa Convention Center, 263 North Center Street in Mesa. Admission is $5. Call 480-253-2701 or visit www.southwestjudo.com for more.
