Any play about the nuclear family enables plenty of inherent conflicts, but popular local playwright Richard Warren stacked the deck by setting Shifting Gears in 1961, when any two people anywhere, related or not, could find at least one world-class reason to disagree. From the sexual revolution to generational differences, American families were influenced by movements that separated loved ones, though the love often persisted.

During a vacation trip to the family’s Michigan cabin, dad Henry finds that his adult children have not turned into people just like his wife and himself. His journey to understand and accept their independence tells a story that should strike a chord with anyone. Slip back in time at 8355 West Peoria Avenue in Peoria.
