Tired of discovering a restaurant’s delectable desserts after already stuffing ourselves full of appetizers and entrees, we’re on a mission to find the places where diners should order dessert first. After all, chicken roulade and lamb vindaloo make excellent leftovers. But ice cream made in-house? Not a chance.

Local favorite Cornish Pasty Co. is first to make our list of dessert visits. No one’s saying not to revel in their incredible savory pasties (do!). But, it’s an unforgivable mistake not to order their desserts. The best part: They have something for everyone, and prices range from $5-$6.

We’re thankful for you. Are you thankful for us?

We feel thankful for our staff and for the privilege of fulfilling our mission to be an unparalleled source of information and insight in Phoenix. We’re aiming to raise $30,000 by December 31, so we can continue covering what matters most to this community.
Help us continue giving back to Phoenix.

$30,000

Dark chocolate lovers will rejoice after one bite of Cornish Pasty’s Chocolate Bread Pudding. The name doesn’t do justice to this dish’s deep, luxurious dark chocolate flavor, and it’s clear that they use the real stuff – Callebaut, perhaps? – to make this addictive dessert.

While bread pudding can be a mushy, soggy mess, Cornish Pasty Co. does it right with a crispy, flavorful layer on top and crème anglaise on the side. It’s hard to imagine a better bread pudding on this side of the Atlantic.

Find out what else we had for dessert after the jump.

The Strawberry Pavlova is a lighter, fruity dessert, and it’s fun to watch the cooks assemble this masterpiece on the spot. A crispy-yet-chewy meringue serves as the base, topped with fresh whipped cream. Grapes, strawberries, and kiwi slices are spread throughout, and the whole sugary mountain is drizzled with raspberry coulis.

This dessert is sweet without being overwhelming, unless of course you choose to eat the whole thing. It’s safe to say that Cornish Pasty Co.’s desserts are designed to be shared.

Other desserts on the Cornish Pasty menu include a PB&J Pasty, an Apple Caramel Pasty, and Shirley Temple’s Favorite Chocolate Pudding. And, for the record, the service is as outstanding as the food.
