Stickler’s is your typical downtown lunch hot spot. Usually completely crowded during lunch since its Third Avenue and Washington Street location is right in the heart of downtown, it’s best to hit this place up after 1 p.m., when most people have already had their lunch. The simple sub shop fare is pretty straightforward, but it’s nice to go somewhere local instead of paying money to the Subway machine.
The lunch hall feel on the inside is a little overwhelming when busy, but you can always take your food outside to either the front or back patio. Stickler’s may seem ordinary, but they have a few tricks up their sleeves that put them ahead of their overly-processed competition. Plus, it’s always a good sign when you see a large apothecary jar full of dill pickles on the counter of any deli.

While the dill pickles were a good sign, an even better one is Italian-style hot peppers on the menu. We had to have them, but we’re also babies when it gets under 70 degrees, so we went for the half-sub-and-soup combo for $6.25. That and a drink plus tax will set you back $8.42.
The combo comes with your choice of a few basic subs. We got the roast beef — of course, we added thick-sliced dill pickles, hot peppers and mustard, along with some other basic sub veggies. The sour pickles and olive oil-drenched spicy peppers added another level to the flavor of the sub, something you just can’t find at the plasticized chains.
The combo also comes with wither chicken noodle soup, chili, or a daily rotating vegetarian option. Their chicken noodle soup, which is what we got, is pretty basic. Overall, Stickler’s isn’t anything mind-blowing or avant-garde, but it’s a solid lunch spot if you’re caught downtown and hankering for a cheap sub with some solid add-ons.
