Pals since elementary school, The Donnas marked their 16-year anniversary of friendship and slumber parties with a greatest-hits album, released earlier this month. The poppy, punk-rock ladies from California jokingly titled the disc Greatest Hits Vol. 16. It’s filled with B-sides, rarities, and live renditions of faves like “Take It Off” and “Fall Behind Me.” Hot off their split with Atlantic Records, the group is now issuing music through Purple Feather Records, its own imprint. Since The Donnas broke through with stand-out discs like 2002’s Spend the Night and 2007’s Bitchin’, more girl bands and female-fronted groups have followed suit, from The Veronicas to Paramore to Hey Monday. In an era that was once dominated by shitty boy bands and emo acts wearing skinny jeans and heavy guyliner, it’s nice to see some girls out there making noise and having a lot of fun while doing it. Let’s hope this girl power is here to stay.
