Arizona Secular Humanists member Randy Jones wanted someone to take Chuck Sloan’s camera so Sloan could get in the photograph. Since Sloan always takes the pictures, he’s seldom in any of them with his fellow nonbelievers.
After an October 8 picnic at a Scottsdale park, Jones spotted U.S. Representative J.D. Hayworth glad-handing his way through the crowd.
“Hey, J.D., can you take our picture?” he asked.
“Well, sure, I’d be glad to,” the Republican freshman reportedly replied.
Figuring, apparently, that Jones and Sloan wanted him in front of the camera and not behind it, Hayworth, holding his son, John Micah, joined the atheists in a photo opportunity.
“I don’t think he had a clue who we were,” says Jones.
Hayworth’s press secretary, Jim Heath, comments: “J.D. Hayworth was elected to represent all the people of the Sixth District of Arizona without inquiry to their philosophical or political beliefs.”
