Pretty much everyone has heard of Cesar Chavez, and a lot of us are familiar with Tomas and the Library Lady, a play by Jose Cruz Gonzalez about Chicano author and poet Tomas Rivera. But few among us are familiar with El Teatro Campesino, a theater troupe founded in the ’60s that used masks and signs to identify both the characters onstage and their situations. All of these things come together in Manzi: The Adventures of Young Cesar Chavez, a new play for young audiences about Chavez’s boyhood, written by Gonzalez and performed in the Campesino style by Teatro Bravo.
The play follows Chavez’s childhood in a family of farm workers laboring in Arizona and California; it will be directed by Teatro Bravo regular Andres Alcala.
