With what the economy’s done to our tax base, we probably wouldn’t be enjoying Shemer Art Center & Museum’s exhibitions and classes this year had the private-sector Shemer Art Center and Museum Association not stepped in. SACAMA operates the center right now, while Phoenix Parks and Recreation maintains the historic property. With such peril and rescue in the recent past of one of our city’s official Points of Pride, “Ascending into the Future” seems an apropos title for its current art show.

The pieces on display, though wildly diverse in media and style, all demonstrate awareness of our world’s future, either via theme or through use of materials chosen with environmental considerations in mind (or both). Juried by longtime Sky Harbor International Airport art museum curator Lennee Eller, the exhibit runs through October 13, with a free opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, September 16. Refreshments will be served, Eller will deliver an informal talk, and you can meet some of the artists.
