Do you know what a harvest moon is? Yeah, we didn’t either until we had to write this piece. Allow us to share our newly acquired knowledge: A harvest moon is the full (or almost full) moon that occurs nearest to the autumnal equinox. And the harvest moon tells farmers it is soon time to work long hours – there’s no total darkness between sunset and moonrise with the following autumnal moons.
Let’s celebrate this useless bit of trivia by trekking the McDowell Mountain Regional Park at the Harvest Moon Full Moon Hike. Hit the Trailhead Staging area to begin the three-mile hike that should take about two hours. Bring a flashlight and $6 for parking.
