The holiday season is here, and with it comes the one thing we dread most. No, not packed shopping malls, annoyingly chipper holiday songs, or umpteen-gazillion reruns of A Christmas Story. We’re talking about arts and crafts fairs. Think cinnamon-spiced potpourri sachets. Reindeer sweatshirts. Crocheted doily angels.

Well, forget the creepy crafts and check out real local art at the Chandler True Pub Art Slam. The new weekly event features DJs spinning hip-hop tunes on old-school vinyl, local artists showcasing their works and competing for a $100 gift certificate, and, of course, tons of beer (it’s at a brewery, after all). While advertisements for the slam encourage taggers and digital photographers to participate, event promoter Landon Evans says that “everyone is welcome,” from classical painters to (gulp) fabric artists. “It doesn’t have to be a specific genre,” he tells New Times. Sounds great, but let’s just pray the needle jockeys leave the doilies at home.
