Back in the day, we haunted a moviehouse that changed its marquee every single day. And not only flicks, but entire bills of fare. One day, there’d be a Peter Sellers triple-bill, the next a pairing of 2001 and Barbarella. Today’s movie-biz mechanics have made such an approach wildly unfeasible, which is why we believe the film-festival circuit has exploded in recent years. That primal urge to bond with fellow aficionados over a smart flick and buttered popcorn has survived the death of the repertory house.
The Valley’s top bonding venue, Harkins Camelview 5, will satisfy our collective repertory itch once more with the 2008 Scottsdale International Film Festival, which features screenings of 26 notable new films beginning with the festival opener, Daniel Barnz’s Phoebe in Wonderland on Friday, October 3, and concluding with Barry Levinson’s What Just Happened? on Tuesday, October 7.
