For four generations, Matthew Moore’s family farmed land on the outskirts of town. By 2001, the Phoenix native noticed that developers, playing Rich Uncle Pennybags in a game of suburban Monopoly, had been creeping in at a startling pace. Beating them to the punch, Moore sculpted the fat of the land to mimic the subdivisions that would soon lay waste to the soil, replacing cookie-cutter houses and labyrinthine cul-de-sacs with sorghum and wheat. His latest exhibition, “Cultivating the Oasis,” features Moore’s gorgeous aerial photographs, taken in the bird’s-eye view of his Baudrillardian gambit and capturing the wave of development lapping at the periphery.
