Baseball’s trade deadline came and went 10 days ago without the Arizona Diamondbacks lifting a finger. Was this decision lazy or savvy — i.e., keeping the core intact? For our money, we applaud you, general manager Josh Byrnes, because, to us, it looks like a commitment to win this year and next. After a successful July, the Snakes find themselves in the nosebleed section of baseball’s toughest division, yet they’re still playing to a half-empty ballpark.
Now, manager Bob Melvin’s overachievers are in the midst of a nine-game stretch in which the young team can — and should — pad its already-impressive win total. The D-Backs welcome one of those teams it should roll over, the going-nowhere Washington Nationals.
