Even world-class artists have to pay bills, especially if they choose to be grown-ups with families and stuff. David Borders served in the Army, got his master’s, and spent decades teaching others. “The contact with students is both stimulating and frustrating, from the point of view that my studio is at home and I’m not there,” Borders says. But now that he’s retired from Cal State Long Beach, he’s more productive and we get to enjoy his “The Collage Art of David Borders” exhibit. Borders’ evocative works blend text, vibrant swipes of paint, photo scraps, and other ephemera. It’s as though a very smart bird was interrupted mid-nest.
