A plea to the National Hockey League: Stop. Just stop now.

Stop what, you ask? The blasted regular season. If you call it quits pronto, the Phoenix Coyotes will make the playoffs, something the team hasn’t accomplished since 2002. But once the ’yotes begin the second half of their season – which begins with a game against the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday, January 27 – you never know what the young pups may do, especially considering defenseman Kurt Sauer’s injury, which will keep the starter out for a month.

So do it, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. Do it now. Make tonight’s game against the Ducks the Coyotes’ last. Start the playoffs in February. Thanks so much.

Tue., Jan. 27, 7 p.m.; Thu., March 19, 7 p.m.; Sat., April 11, 5 p.m., 2009
