We dig you, Phoenix.
That’s why every spring we hunt for emerging creatives doing exceptional things in metro Phoenix and award the best and brightest with Big Brain Awards and cash prizes. They’re gems, these up-and-coming sculptors, dancers, musicians, and chefs. It’s what makes them Big Brains.
For the 2015 awards, we’ve created a new category, music, to recognize creative types working to make Phoenix sound better. Big Brain nominations are open now through Monday, March 16, for Valley residents who deserve to win $500 in the following categories: visual art, performing art, design, culinary art, and music.

We feel thankful for our staff and for the privilege of fulfilling our mission to be an unparalleled source of information and insight in Phoenix. We’re aiming to raise $30,000 by December 31, so we can continue covering what matters most to this community.

Past winners and finalists include Orange Theatre, Carlos Reyes of Club Fonograma, Michael Babcock and Jenn Robinson of Welcome Diner, visual artist Sarah Hurwitz, and designer Jon Arvizu.
Three finalists in each category will be chosen and profiled both in print and on New Times arts and culture, food, and music blogs.
We’ll reveal this year’s winners (one from each category) on Saturday, May 9, at Monarch Theatre during New Times‘ Artopia, our annual soiree of art, music, food, and drinks. More details about the party will be announced soon.
To access an exclusive Artopia ticket pre-sale starting at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 5, use the code JACKALOPE at the Artopia event page on Ticketfly. The presale ends at 10 p.m. Sunday, March 8. Tickets are $25 and go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. Monday, March 9.
