He’s the lead singer of twentythree-year-old power pop dream The Posies and rounds out the second-wave Big Star revival. But next Friday, Jon Auer will be all alone at Last Exit in Tempe, showcasing his extensive repertoire of solo work.
This will be Auer’s first time in The Valley going bar-bones without a flock of musicians (or more importantly, his guitar-wielding partner Ken Stringfellow) to back him up. However, Auer is no stranger to going solo; releasing an EP and a full-length album, Songs from the Year of Our Demise, in 2006.
With The Posies, Auer has released ten albums (so far), one of which is a “Best of.” The Posies’ single “Dream All Day,” off of 1993’s Frosting on The Beater reached number four on the U.S. Modern Rock Charts.
Aside from his two-decades with The Posies, Auer is a musical journeyman: Founding the Trance Rock group Sky Cries Mary in 1989, and having cups of tea with at least three other musical acts, including his very own Jon Auer Experience, since the mid-eighties… Not to mention his guitar work on Don’t-Call-Me-Captain-Kirk William Shatner’s 2004 record, Has Been, which was produced by Ben Folds.
Next Friday’s show also features an extensive multi-talented lineup opening for Auer. This includes, but is certainly not limited to, comedian Sean McCarthy and a live art performance by HowYouSay.
